Diyanto
B. 1962
Diyanto is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, performance, installation, site-specific projects, and theatrical art direction. In 1987, he took part in the ASEAN Young Painters Workshop at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore under the mentorship of Tang Da Wu, before completing his Fine Arts degree at the Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). He went on to study Theatre Scenography in Augsburg, Germany in 1992. Since 1987, he has been actively participating in both solo and group exhibitions.
His background in both visual art and theatre has shaped a practice that blurs the line between the two. Beyond painting, he is also known for his active role in the artistic direction of various theatre groups. For Diyanto, painting is not something confined to the studio. It is a way of observing and making sense of the world around him. This approach has made him deeply aware of social realities, while keeping him critical of things that are illusory, rigid, or taken for granted. Underlying all of this is a ongoing desire to understand himself as an individual navigating the complexities of modern life.
