Basoeki Abdullah

<p><strong>Fransiskus Xaverius Basoeki Abdullah</strong> (born Mohammad Basoeki Abdoellah; January 25, 1915 – November 5, 1993) was one of Indonesia's greatest master painters, renowned for his realism and naturalism styles. His legendary masterpieces not only adorn Indonesian state and presidential palaces but are also highly valued collections across the globe.</p><p><br></p><p>Along with his older brother, <a href="https://global.auction/artists/2083/sudjono-abdullah/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Soedjono Abdullah</a>, his artistic talent ran deep in his family. He was the son of <a href="https://global.auction/artists/21/abdullah-soerio-soebroto/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Abdullah Suriosubroto</a>, an established painter and dancer. Furthermore, he was the grandson of dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo, a prominent figure in the historical movement of the Indonesian National Awakening. In 1933, with the assistance of Father Koch SJ, he secured a scholarship to study at the Academy of Fine Arts (<em>Academie Voor Beeldende Kunsten</em>) in The Hague, Netherlands. He completed his studies in just three years and was awarded the Royal International of Art (RIA) Certificate. After graduating, he pursued comparative studies at various renowned art schools in Paris and Rome.</p><p><br></p><p>During the Japanese occupation, Basoeki was actively involved in community art organizations. He joined the Poetra (<em>Pusat Tenaga Rakyat</em> / Centre of People's Power) movement in 1943 to teach painting, mentoring future art figures such as <a href="https://global.auction/artists/1240/kusnadi/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Kusnadi</a> and <a href="https://global.auction/artists/2579/zaini/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zaini</a>. Additionally, he was active in the <em>Keimin Bunka Shidosho</em> cultural center alongside other legendary painters like <a href="https://global.auction/artists/50/affandi-koesoema/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Affandi</a>, <a href="https://global.auction/artists/1936/sindudarsono-sudjojono/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">S. Sudjojono</a>, <a href="https://global.auction/artists/1685/otto-djaya-suntara/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Otto Djaya</a>, and <a href="https://global.auction/artists/45/basoeki-resobowo/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Basuki Resobowo</a>.</p><p><br></p><p>As an artist, Basoeki was highly celebrated as a master portrait painter capable of capturing romantic aesthetics with a powerful realist technique, particularly when painting prominent figures and beautiful women. His expertise was not confined to human portraits; it also encompassed landscapes, flora, fauna, as well as grand themes like national struggle and development.</p><p><br></p><p>He spent most of his life abroad holding solo exhibitions in various countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Japan, leading to his works being collected by at least 22 nations. Between 1960 and 1978, he resided in Thailand as the official court painter for King Bhumibol Adulyadej. This extraordinary talent also led President Sukarno to appoint him as the official painter of the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta upon his return to Indonesia.</p>
