NEO Gallery, in collaboration with ArtSociates, has opened the group exhibition titled “On Form & Narrative” at NEO Gallery, Jalan Tanah Abang IV No. 23-35, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The exhibition will continue daily until October 20, 2024.
The exhibition was opened by collector Maxi Gunawan, who expressed his admiration for NEO Gallery's leap in presenting selected artworks. “I am amazed,” stated Mr. Gunawan during his opening speech.
Dewi Motik Pramono, an entrepreneur and collector, also attended the exhibition opening, emphasizing the importance of educating artists. “We cannot train artists to be entrepreneurs, but we can educate them to become entrepreneurs,” she remarked to the attending collectors.
A Showcase of Selected Modern and Contemporary Artworks
“This exhibition is the result of our collaboration with ArtSociates through a meticulous curation and selection process, allowing us to present the best artworks from significant artists,” explained Randy Raharjo, director of NEO Gallery. Many of the artists featured in this exhibition are alumni of the Bandung Contemporary Art Award (BaCAA) organized by ArtSociates.
Art lovers and collectors visiting NEO Gallery can appreciate the works of nineteen artists, including contemporary abstract sculptures, figurative sculptures, abstract paintings, realist paintings, and graphic artworks, which are referred to as graphics in this exhibition. This also serves as an effort by ArtSociates and NEO Gallery to educate the public, particularly young collectors, to appreciate important artworks from each era.
Andonowati, Director of ArtSociates, added, “This exhibition is designed for optimal appreciation by art collectors, considering the completeness of the available art mediums. Therefore, we present paintings, sculptures, and graphics produced by artists with excellent portfolios.”
Exploring Form and Narrative in Art
The form and narrative represented in this exhibition reflect the material, creative processes, and aesthetic ideas chosen by each artist. “Form and narrative are intertwined and cannot be separated. One key phrase is: if the tendency of 'formality' prioritizes form, it does not mean that there is no narrative,” explained Heru Hikayat, the exhibition curator.
The artists in this exhibition blend form and narrative in unique ways. “It does not mean that one is of higher quality than the other. This exhibition presents different choices from each artist. From all the works, we can observe how these two elements combine, regardless of which is more dominant,” he continued.
Celebrating the Diversity of 19 Chosen Artists
The selected artists featured in the exhibition “On Form & Narrative” include AD. Pirous, Eddy Susanto, Etza Meisyara, Gabriel Aries, Gregorius Sidharta, Guntur Timur, Mariam Sofrina, Mujahidin Nurrahman, Nesar Eesar, Reggie Aquara, Rendy Raka Pramudya, Restu Taufik Akbar, and Satya Cipta.
In addition to paintings and sculptures, the collaboration between Hybridium and NEO Gallery also showcases graphic works in a presentation titled “Narrative and Form in Graphics: A Presentation from Hybridium.” The participating artists are Basqkek, Cecil Mariani, Devy Ferdianto, Goenawan Mohamad, I Kadek Septa Adi, and Tisna Sanjaya.
“The Hybridium presentation features works from six artists who blend various graphic elements with their unique characteristics. The term ‘graphics’ essentially refers to any activity that leaves a meaningful mark on a surface,” said Heru Hikayat.
