Marhaban Ya Ramadhan: Islamic Art Exhibition

  • Feb 24, 2025

Entering the holy month of Ramadan 1446 H, NEO Gallery is delighted to present an exceptional exhibition of Islamic visual arts titled Marhaban ya Ramadhan: In the Name of Sincerity, In the Name of Humanity. This innovative exhibition brings together 42 artworks by 15 distinguished Indonesian artists, redefining traditional Islamic art through contemporary expression and thoughtful commentary.

A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

Curated by acclaimed literary figure Okky Madasari—renowned for her insightful explorations of Islamic thought—the exhibition challenges conventional perceptions of Islamic art. It goes beyond reproducing Arabic calligraphy, geometric patterns, or natural motifs. Instead, it celebrates art as a dynamic expression of life, spirituality, and the human experience.

“This exhibition dismantles the narrative that Islamic visual art is confined to mere calligraphy or geometric shapes. Instead, it is a vibrant reflection of life and the teachings of Islam,” explained Okky Madasari.

Okky outlines three primary themes that shape the exhibition:

1. Spiritual Expression: Artworks serve as a medium for conveying Islamic values and fostering a deep connection between individuals and the Divine.

2. Social Engagement: The pieces respond to social injustices and global humanitarian concerns, from domestic inequities to the struggles faced in Palestine.

3. Healing and Resilience: In a time marked by a mental health crisis, the use of sacred calligraphy emerges as a powerful tool for emotional healing and spiritual restoration.

Celebrating Diverse Artistic Voices

The exhibition features a vibrant roster of artists, including Agus Baqul, Anis Affandi, Badrus Zaman, Didin Sirojuddin, Fadriah, Fatwa Amalia, Ilham Khoiri, Isep Misbah, Kurnia Agung, Muna Diannur, Qonita Farah, Said Akram, Syaiful Adnan, Ujang Badrussalam, and Yusuf Susilo Hartono. Hailing from various regions across Indonesia, these artists bring unique perspectives and creative insights that enrich the dialogue between tradition and innovation.

NEO Gallery Director Stefanus Randy Oenardi Raharjo emphasized the gallery’s commitment to nurturing artistic diversity, "This exhibition is a testament to the significant role of Islamic visual art within Indonesia’s cultural landscape. We remain dedicated to supporting talented artists and sharing their visionary work with a wider audience."
